Assessments have always been a part of the classroom, whether it was a simple, weekly spelling test or a deep, involved performance assessment. As access to technology and internet resources have expanded, so too have the use and sophistication of digitized assessments. The Common Core State Standards will be assessed for writing and other content standards through online tools. The writing assessment will be through MIST for Tennessee. The PARCC assessment will take the place of TCAP in Tennessee. To prepare students for these assessments and the skills needed to properly show their knowledge, we have provided some resources below that should prove helpful.
The examples provided are intended to model different assessment types. They do not reflect the final display, wording, or interactivity that assessment items will ultimately contain, nor are the items designed to function on mobile devices. Additionally, these prototypes are not intended to address the entire range of computer-based display styles and embedded supports that will be made available for students with disabilities during the administration of the actual assessment.-http://www.ccsstoolbox.com/parcc/PARCCPrototype_main.html
Students will need varied rich experiences with online writing tools. Multiple exposures with tools that are similar to the assessment format will help students prepare.
The predicted necessary technology skills and vocabulary include:
Skills
Vocabulary
Manipulation of multiple scrolling windows of text
Teachers should consistently use appropriate vocabulary when providing online writing experiences.
Example Tools
In DiscoveryEducation, Students log in to a secure environment and access writing prompts assigned by the teacher in which they are presented with a response text box with editing tools. The prompt box does not include spell check or auto correcting as student write. The writing can then be saved or submitted to the teacher.
Although iPads can be accessed through the Safari browser and can be used to respond to DiscoveryEducation's Writing Prompts, the tools listed below will not be visible.
The image below shows a comparison of tools in the MIST Online Writing Assessment and DiscoveryEducation's Writing Prompt.

Students log in to a secure classroom community and publish posts and participate in academic discussions. Teachers can create and assign writing prompts. Students create “new posts” in a response text box with editing tools including spell check and auto correction. Since students can view others’ writing, this tool encourages the use of specific academic feedback from teacher or peers and writing revision.
In the short answer feature, students compose a digital response within a text box, then submit the response to the teacher which can be shared with other students for anonymous peer evaluation.
